THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW - REVIEW - WOLVERHAMPTON GRAND - WEDNESDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 2010

Hello Wussey!

So last night I went to see The Rocky Horror Show at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

It was my first time seeing the show having known a little about it but not much....

What I Already Knew:

Audience participation is key to the show - a bit like panto - and the audience dress up as the characters in the show or simply their own style that reflects the show.

The Show:

The show begins with the Usherette singing Science Fiction - solid vocals from Kara Lane - who then changes into the role of Magenta later.

The set is simple and yet effective - with sliding ladders that the characters continuously use, and most of the scenery comprises of walls and doors that all slide on (push and pull thanks to the Phantoms)

No covers were on for this performance meaning that Henry Davis had a nice easy show - pushing a castle along and then making an appearance in act 2 for an orgy! (This isn't your typical family show!)

The Rocky Horror Show is crude and very sexual and generally not for the young ones at all - the site states that the show has a PG rating - leaving it entirely up to parents as to whether they bring children along.  I would recommend that you DEFINITELY DO NOT TAKE CHILDREN to see the show.....the most common word I heard from the audience participation was "cock".

The cast were all strong and great at their roles - and were magnificently lead by David Badella's 'Frank N Furter' (not appearing in Aberdeen or Edinburgh) whom I had previously seen in the hilarious Jerry Springer The Opera.

Badella's comedic timing was brilliant and he gave the audience exactly what they wanted - he looked great in heels and his vocals were magnificanet.

Ceris Hine proved a brilliant quirky character as she took on the role of Columbia - her tap dancing was spot-on, her singing too,  and she most definitely wins the awards for sparkliest costumes!

Hine was earlier awarded 'The Voice Of Tomorrow' by London's theatre goers when she competed in a 3-day singing marathon to win over the public - a clear winner with her solo rendition of 'The Girl In 14G'.

Dominic Tribuzio was the perfect Rocky - his muscle definition is all over his body and his acrobatics, bleached hair, and tiny pants drove the audience wild.  I wouldn't like to be covered in that body glitter every night though!

The Narrator was performed by TV Chef and personality Ainsley Harriott - bringing his Cous-Cous Cookbook with him!

Mark Evans is now in rehearsals for the UK Tour of Okahoma! The Musical and so the role of 'Brad' has been taken over by Richard Meek - who with Haley Flaherty's 'Janet' - provide a great un-suspecting couple who are in love - until they end up having sex with Frank N Furter by accident.......DON'T ASK!!!!!

So The Rocky Horror Show is not for the faint-hearted....it is incredibly rude with sexual acts simulated throughout including dare I say.......fingering, rimming, blow-jobs, anal, and lesbian kissing.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!

Having said that.....the show is all-in-all a full-out comedy show and has been entertaining audiences for years!

The show has a huge cult following who really do follow the show wherever it goes in the UK!

Be prepared to dance the 'Time-Warp' and get into the aisles for the finale to give yourself the most room to really extend your arms!!! ha ha
So the show is basically a HOOT!!!!!

Go see it!

And go be entertained!!!!!

Andrew Lloyd Webber unveiled his brand new production “LOVE NEVER DIES” at a global launch in London. “LOVE NEVER DIES” continues the story of ‘The Phantom’, who has moved from his lair in the Paris Opera House to haunt the fairgrounds of Coney Island, far across the Atlantic. Set 10 years after the mysterious disappearance of ‘The Phantom’ from Paris, this show is a rollercoaster ride of obsession and intrigue...in which music and memory can play cruel tricks...and ‘The Phantom’ sets out to prove that, indeed, “LOVE NEVER DIES”.

“The Phantom of the Opera”, based on the French novel by Gaston Leroux, has proved a huge success the world over and has been seen by over 100 million people, making it the single most successful entertainment entity in history. The show has been translated into 15 languages and appeared in over 25 different countries including China, Brazil, Poland and Korea. “The Phantom of the Opera” opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London on 9 October 1986 starring Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford and celebrates its 23rd London birthday tomorrow on 9 October. “The Phantom of the Opera” won a staggering 50 awards worldwide, whilst global album sales currently stand at over 40 million copies.

Ramin Karimloo will create the role of ‘The Phantom’ in “LOVE NEVER DIES”, having already played the role to great acclaim in “The Phantom of the Opera” in London. Ramin’s other stage credits include starring as ‘Enjolras’ in “Les Misérables” in the West End, ‘Chris’ in the UK tour of “Miss Saigon” and ‘Artie Green’ in the UK tour of “Sunset Boulevard”. Ramin also played ‘Raoul’ in the West End production of “The Phantom of the Opera”, as well as the role of ‘Christine’s Father’ in Joel Schumacher’s film, making him the only actor to play all three of ‘Christine’s’ loves.

Sierra Boggess will create the role of ‘Christine’ in “LOVE NEVER DIES”. Sierra made her Broadway debut creating the lead role of ‘Ariel’ in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, receiving both Drama League and Drama Desk Award nominations and a Broadway.com Audience Award for ‘Favourite Breakthrough Performance’. She also understudied the role of ‘Cosette’ on the Broadway National Tour of “Les Misérables”. In 2007 Sierra was handpicked by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Prince to originate the role of ‘Christine’ in a brand new production of “Phantom - the Las Vegas Spectacular”. “LOVE NEVER DIES” marks Sierra’s West End debut.

Glenn Slater, lyricist, was nominated for the 2008 Tony and Grammy Awards for Disney’s theatrical production of “The Little Mermaid”. He is lyricist on the current London production of “Sister Act”. Bob Crowley, set and costume designer, recently worked on “Phèdre” with Helen Mirren at the National Theatre. His many award-winning productions include “The History Boys”, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”, Disney’s “Aida”, “Mary Poppins” and “The Year of Magical Thinking”.

Choreographer Jerry Mitchell recently made his directorial debut with “Legally Blonde” on Broadway and also choreographed the award-winning musical productions of “La Cage aux Folles”, “Hairspray” and “The Full Monty”. Director Jack O’Brien directed the award-winning London production of “Hairspray” and won Tony awards for the Broadway productions of Tom Stoppard’s “The Coast of Utopia”, “Hairspray” and the 2004 production of “Henry IV”. His other productions include Stoppard’s “The Invention of Love”, “The Full Monty”, “Hapgood”, “Damn Yankees”, “The Little Foxes”, and operas including “Street Scene” at New York City Opera and “Il Triticco” at the Metropolitan Opera later this year.

The World Premiere of “LOVE NEVER DIES” will take place in London on 9 March 2010 at the Adelphi Theatre. Previews begin on 20 February. The show will then premiere in New York on 11 November 2010 and in Australia in 2011.

The “LOVE NEVER DIES” album was completed in September 2009 and will be released on Wednesday, 10 March 2010, the day after the World Premiere in London.

I did not take note of which covers were on - if any - stupid Wussey!

What I Already Knew:

had already been warned that Patina Miller's version of Deloris is nothing like Whoopi Goldberg's so I was open-minded to her performance. I knew the song Raise Your Voice as it had been their promo song and I also knew Take Me To Heaven as my old housemate nearly landed the role of Sister Mary Robert (after of course being beaten by Katie Rowley Jones) and Take Me To Heaven was one of the songs she had to learn for her audition.

http://www.ukslc.org/images/stories/casestories/whitelight/2304ashmore1335_copy_ukslc.jpg

The Show:

The announcement from Whoopi Goldberg to turn our phones off and not take any pictures was WAY TOO QUIET.......maybe it is a method to make people shut up and listen but I don't think it works - it just means you can't hear the announcement very well and got me thinking - I hope the rest of the show isn't gonna be this quiet!

Did not like the way the show started with Mother Superior walking in front of the curtain - I kinda felt like it was panto time with the Fairy Godmother giving her opening speech.

I really enjoyed the opening number Take Me To Heaven - with no nuns in sight! I was reminded of when I was younger and watching shows like "Oh What A Night" at the Regent Theatre in Stoke.

http://www.techietalk.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/sister-act-copyright-catherine-ashmore-1.jpg

I am a sucker for a revolving stage - I just think they are ace and look like sooooo much fun to perform on!!! And Sister Act takes advantage of this in so many ways. The set can have such a wow factor with all the stone arches that are created and they way they appear and move is just fascinating. Someone has definitely spent a lot of time configuring it all.

Having said that - I felt that the baddies in the show really were neglected with the "Shanks Office" scene that just seemed to comprise of a Big Brother style chair and a naked lady lamp.

I always feel that a West End theatre - especially one as grand as the London Palladium should always make the most of not being on tour and being able to use amazing sets. Sister Act did have some amazing set pieces - but then also totally flipped for some scenes and had very little going on.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/06/03/article-1190502-05307312000005DC-153_468x393.jpg

The songs in the show were really hit or miss - "Take Me To Heaven", "Fabulous, Baby" & "Raise Your Voice" are the big hits that you will leave the show singing....."Sister Act" and "The Life I Never Led" are the ballads that for me don't quite pack a punch as much as I hoped they would given that Alan Menken wrote them.

http://static.visitlondon.com/assets/events/theatre/sister_act_men_500.png

"Lady In The Long Black Dress" has to win the award for the biggest stinker of a song - I just think the song is awful and instantly forgettable.

Patina Miller is no Whoopi Goldberg - as I had been warned about - but she does make a good effort at the role. I couldn't help but feel that someone like Fantasia Barrino would have been better though as she has a peculiar build and voice and is funny and could really pack a punch with her vocals and character performance.

Could someone reading this please explain why there is a male who is a nun the entire time with everyone else? I'm not complaining I just don't understand why this is in the show!

Claire Greenway was incredibly funny as Sister Mary Patrick - with her funny glasses and lyrics and singing - she was brilliant.

Ako Mitchell as Eddie reminded me of Will Ferrell and Sister Mary Lazarus played by Julia Sutton was great with her funny rapping!

My favourite scene by far was the chase scene near the end where the whole set transforms to a black and white checkered effect and yes the super-duper revolving floor is brought in to play.

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01392/sister_act_main_ph_1392782c.jpg

So Who Would I Recommend This To?

It's a great feel-good uplifting show with comedy and great songs - families can watch and couples will enjoy it too - the auditorium was full of families and large groups so it is clearly for all-ages.
